Dsdn 171 BLog 5 LOCOVISUAL

OLD ST. PAUL'S CHURCH
'Old St. Paul's church' is signified to be one of New Zealand's most historic places. Designed by Reverend Fredrick Thatcher, the building was produced to have the Gothic revival style. This was because Thatcher was heavily influenced by the teachings of the English Ecclesiological society which is a movement that was advocated to the return of Gothic Style of religious architecture.

The mixture of Gothic design and wood construction produced Old St. Paul's to be depicted as one of New Zealand's finest early building and most " Loveliest of all wooden churches", being one of the best examples of Gothic revival adapted to wood as the building material, therefore can be referred as 'Colonial Gothic'. The designs of the wooden archways, solid square pillars, stained glass windows and roof timber clearly shows the Gothic revival adapted to suit the materials, which even though it is early English Gothic it is unmistakeably a New Zealand church. This magnificent timber Gothic revival architecture therefore has the immediate impression of New Zealand through the wooden arches of the nave, rimu for the framing and trusses, matai and totoara for the flooring, kauri for the seats and totoara for the sheathing.

The social history of Old St. Paul's tells of New Zealand's journey from colony to independent nation. The funerals of prime ministers were held here, the land wars of the 1860's and soldiers of the first world war are also commemorated here in glass and brass memorials, being one of New Zealand's greatest heritage battles, ultimately giving great cultural and historical context to this church.

DSDN 101 group work two proj 3

In this group project we have grasped the main points of conceptualising, developing then producing a visually engaging advertisement for our group brand, CONFLICT RECORDS.

"Conflict Records" is the fictitious company that we portrayed in this task. After some thought on what the company might represent, we came to the desicion that they should be  record store, that appealed to the target audience of the ages 18-35.The keyword of 'Conflict' was the main idea behind our whole advertisement. The images and thoughts of that word, sprung to mind many ideas, from where we used the portrayal of war to depict our theme for this assignment. To visually depict our advertisement we used the colour themes of red, black and white, along with geometric shapes and photo montage to correspond with a theme akin to the Russian constructivist era of the early 20th century. This was merged with paint splatters, radio signals/ waves, and a military stencil font, to modernise the constructivist look and give a sense of new-age grunge music.
Music has always had dual function in war; as a means of communication and psychological warfare in the direct sense and as a major role in the commemoration or expression of feeling about war. There are many reasons a war comes about, and typically on of those reasons is a domestic revolution. This train of thought lead us to use the the French revolution as a precedent for our advertisements, and thus our slogan 'La Revolution' - A message of rebellion, one that we think represents "Conflict Records" well."
This was from my co workers blog.

DSDN104- proj2- FINAL PHYSICAL RENDER

This is my final render for my physical render, I placed my object towards the top end corner of the floor and took a picture from floor level upwards, to capture the reflections of my design, giving you a full representation of the object at a different angle. This also comes together with gem like image, as a gem gleams and reflects itself. In photo shop i only changed the levels of light and dark, to show that this object is from the ground, with the light shining from the top centre to show that produces something very delicate and shiny.

DSDN104-proj2 - Physical photos.

DSDN104-proj2- FINAL RENDERED IMAGE

For my image i simply just added an infinity wall, added daylight, with the sunlight as mr sun, skylight as mr sky beaming straight downwards onto the object. For materials, i used arch and design- mental ray, with the diffuse colour a light blue, and the diffraction colour a darker blue, to give that sapphire gem look to it. Had the shadom on to give that its a physical 3d obect on the ground.
In photo shop, i just changed the levels of light and dark in certain areas to bring it out more.

DSDN104- proj2- DEVELOPMENT

This was the outcome of my design. I liked it but i wanted to add more structure, durability and aesthetic to the design, so i added more main frames to the centre to add more layers, and strength to the object. Giving it more of a gem like structure to the design. As seen above with the new physical photos.

This is the frontal layout of my design, the central frame pieces were all connected together by slots, but were as one piece not halved, from were the vertical pieces slotted together through the middle.
I had redesign the centre angel piece as the connections were not working when i placed it vertically, to give/keep the symmetrical design aspect of the object.

With adding a two pieces to each side, added more strength and durability to the frames making it a more dependant design. To do this i added more slots between the bottom and centre   slots and one between the top and centre slots.

This images show again where they were broken, and the sizes of the different pieces that were used to slot everything in. Had to resize the small/big slots pieces as alot were either to loose or some just did  not go in, so made multiple amounts of them with different sizes, raging from 2.1mm,  2.15mm and 2.2mm

This image shows that, the slots that i had were to low, and close to the edges, and therefore broke quite easily when trying to slot in my pieces, so i had to make the design wide enough so that they would not break,  and much more lower from the top edge and sides so that they can slot in more effectively with the hassle of being very very careful with slotting.

This shows my development of how big my first design was, i found that it was to small, and pieces were to busy, as it had less negative space to fully show the structure of the design.
So i made bigger pieces  to add more strength and better aesthetic to the design.

In this phase i developed my concept, by changing the whole form  of the object to better suit the needs of how everything is going to come together, the actual structure of the object, and holding more of a relevance to my precedents. Made it  more 3D with adding a second frame vertically, to give a more diamond/sapphire gem like structure. Added the angel like shape in the middle for the sentimental value. Still used the slotting technique to have the secondary vertical frames connect to the main frame. This was also used for my angel shape on its wings.

DSDN104- proj 2- SKETCH MODELS

I was showing form from the use of curves, whilst still using slotting as my key connection for my model. Trying to make some sort of object with this model.

With this form i was giving the structure like a building platform, from were it started big at the bottom, and built upwards, with smaller pieces in an abstract way.

This object i used basic shapes placed in different positions, so that form and structure can change when you place it around different angles and sides, it will still be able to stand.

This object i experimented with slotting right through a piece not just sliding it into something from side. so i had one large structural piece in the middle that went right through, with abstract pieces on the side.

This model is the one i am developing from, as it uses the slotting technique in different ways, to bring the together the whole structure.

DSDN104- proj 2- PRECEDENTS

This glassed angel i still want to show in my design, as i did in my last project. I believe that it holds many sentimental vales, and will add more design into my object.

DSDN104- proj 2- PRECEDENTS

These precedents that i have chosen, are glassed trophies. I want my model to depict this, to give like some form of structure to the design, as well being able to be held like a trophy for someone.

DSDN104 PROJ 2- PRECEDENTS

I wanted to try a depiction of gems. So i have chosen a sapphire from the left hand side. I liked the sapphire as the colours that it brings makes it seem more interesting.
The diamond seems to me as something real presious, and always want to have and keep nicely. being a prized possesion of someones belongings.

Again i have anther picture of the sapphire, But this one has more or a rounded shape, and the colour of the sapphire really appeals to me. So with these sapphires i want to have the colour of one of these or a combination of both.

Brainstorm 101

This is my first brainstorm of project three in 101, of what i think of when it comes to industrial design.
Personally i want to get into product design, were i can remake/redesign sportswear and gear for the future

DSDN 111 Final images of model

These are my final images of my model, i tried to show the craft of the weaving of the wire through the sheet plastic, the curves of the wave inside and out, then showing textures and refelctions of what you wouldnt see from beneath the image

DSDN 111 model development

From my precedents i started making models, i was quite interested in natural features, so i went something very fluid like (as said by for rococo) a wave like structure and motion.|
firstly used paper from i investigated the use of wire and paper to make some sort of form. initially i was quite interested in form, but then everything did not stay together. so with that i made adjustments with going with see through sheet plastic then gave my strength and durability to the design, whilst incorporating a wave like structure. This image of a wave seemed to have come together quite nicely with the wire woven through the object. Therefore i developed that idea by incorporating a smaller wave with different type of sheet plastic inside to give some sort of change in levels, and so you can see the inner wave. But lastly i came up with my final design by incorporating two waves opposite and reflected, with sheet plastic, woven together by two aluminium wire. This image in my head came into  reality as it came together in front of my eyes.

DSDN 101 PROJ 3 TASK ONE

Our company was CONFLICT RECORDS, we decided that they were a music group/radio station, that was aimed for age groups around 18 to early 30s.

Our slogan was revolution, is we fond it fiitng for the whole interface of the poster/ audience target group. We used this as French literature, as the first thing that came to our minds was the french revolution.

The word "conflict" grunge to our minds as an army/grunge type feel. So we used this scrateched blocked stencil font, to show that that, and we used the colours of black white and red.

We used the precedents of guns, records and blood splatter as our images for this poster.

Overall i think we put together a good poster, everyone was a real team player and helped out, so no critsium there.

DSDN 171 blog 4

The essence of fluidity and form are clearly evident in the given precedents of the design. The wave of this design reflects Rococo style through its relations of its wave like structure, to that of Rococo's aquatic themes. Rococo's style of bending unnatural materials to a natural motion has also been portrayed by how the 0.5mm sheet plastic curved unnaturally, through sheer force into a slot, but giving an overall  graceful curve like appearance that seems naked to the eye.

Fluidity can not be produced the same way by a machine than that of a hand can create motion in material. The way in which the design has been weaved gives the sense of long hard labour, giving the  curve and form a creative edge. The arts and craft movement of the design reform period to believed in the  ideal of hand craft, from which John Ruskin's thoughts were that through the use of hand man craftsmanship, the form/motion of the curve/object will be much more appreciated or recognized than that of a mass produced item by machine (Ruskin 1853). Therefore the craftsmanship of weaving wire through thick materials, adds both strength/durability and a feature to the design.

The romantic rococo curves are shown through the precedent image of the the pavilion, from which this wave like structure  has been formed through straight lines that build up and over and back around again to give a crashing wave like motion from where this design upholds most of its qualities.

"The breaking wave and muscle as it contracts obey the same law. Delicate line gathers the bodys total strength in a bold balance. shall my soul so severe a curve, journeying on it's way to form"(Dag  Hammerskjold). The structure of the precedents and the design portray this quite vividly. As when looking from one end of the wire and follow it along, you feel a sense of power and strength building upwards, then as it gets to its peak comes crashing back around giving a change in strength and motion as it curves around just like a wave.

DSDN 101 FINAL STORY BOARDS

These are my final story boards, had to re do my final one, which is command, and added more detail to it.
